The EMJMD-MARBLE consortium was informally established in 2011 after an initial meeting addressing the need for post-graduate studies in BLS held in May in Salzburg, Austria. The need for such a level of education was identified by the General Governing Body of the EPBS, at their meeting in October of 2010 in Verona, Italy with 23 European countries represented. A survey of the members highlighted the necessity to protect patient care and safety via provision of a high quality integrated European post-graduate education. The results of this survey led to an agreed policy on education for BLS  and identifies that progress to higher level degrees (i.e. Masters and PhD) is an integral part of the Education and Training of BLs in the European area
